about us

Every horse deserves a dignified, valued, and care-centered life.

The Loving Farm is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing lifelong sanctuary, compassionate care, and unconditional love to unwanted, geriatric, and at-risk horses that would otherwise face uncertain and often tragic outcomes. Our efforts and interventions ensure that our horses live out their days with dignity, respect, and safety.

Our mission

The unwanted horse is a dire welfare issue in the U.S. horse industry.

According to the American Association of Equine Practitioners, unwanted horses include those no longer wanted by their current owners due to illness, old age, injury, behavior problems, or simply because they fail to meet owner expectations. The fate of these horses all too frequently leads to neglect, abuse, and death. Unwanted horses often have multiple owners, are moved from one farm to another, are put up for auction, and are shipped to slaughterhouses in Mexico or Canda. This phenomenon occurs in across the horse industry and is particularly prevalent in horse racing and competitive horse-showing.

Thankfully, numerous horse rescue, adoption, and retirement organizations have made tremendous efforts in providing these horses a second chance. But the long lifespan of the horse of up to 30 years makes for funding barriers. Simply put, there aren’t enough organizations to care for the estimated 100,000 horses that become unwanted each year.

The Loving Farm aims to make a small but significant dent in that number. Our horses come from a variety of backgrounds: retired school horses, permanently injured or medically compromised horses, behaviorally-challenged horses – through no fault of their own, and more. We do not adopt out our horses: instead, we provide them comprehensive healthcare, nutritious food, a safe, natural environment where they can be their beautiful, noble horsey selves, and a forever home.

about the founder

Kim Pecs

Kim Pecs is a trainer, riding instructor, and horse owner with 30 years of experience in equine caregiving, horse training, riding instruction, and horseshow competition. She has seen firsthand the lifecycle of performance and school horses, and this has greatly informed her decision to take on the momentous task of devoting her time, energy, and resources to taking on unwanted horses. Throughout her equine career, Kim’s priority has always been on ensuring the wellbeing of every horse she has contact with, and then some. She has kept and cared for the horses she used for horseback riding lessons, rather than, as is often the case, sending them into the unknown once they outlive their usefulness. She has accepted horses that are deemed useless or damaged, or unable to meet the demands of their intended riding. In some instances, she has rescued horses from negligent and/or abusive circumstances.

At The Loving Farm, Kim tends to the specific needs of each horse: veterinarian care, hoof and teeth maintenance, suitable feed, and safe, horse-friendly pastures and paddocks. It is a pricey and labor-intensive endeavor, but Kim’s passion and love for horses compels her to fulfill what she sees is her responsibility to give them the lives they deserve.
